Book Review:  NeuroTribes by Steve Silberman

NeuroTribes The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity by Steve Silberman, (2015), is an insightful addition to the field of autism.  I have been working with families impacted with an ASD for over 25 years, and I have been witness to the evolution of the diagnosis of autism during that time.  Reading NeuroTribes was fascinating as it brought together a wealth of information about autism from a historical perspective, while exploring the present and anticipating the future of autism.  The book is written in such a way that allows one to slowly shift perspective on autism, and guides the reader to understand the importance of finding and appreciating the strengths of an individual instead of focusing on the challenges.

One of the many reasons I enjoyed NeuroTribes is that it demonstrates how the field of autism is shifting from trying to find a cure, to supporting individuals both young and old in carving out their unique place in communities across the country.  In recent years, I have been looking to find a way in my own practice to support the shift from cure to acceptance, and I found that developing skills in college counseling is an amazing way to be a part of this wonderful movement in the field.  I am excited to be learning about all of the unique programs colleges and universities offer students with an ASD to fit into the college community and thrive.  NeuroTribes is a book that captures the history of autism and shows us where autism is today.  It is a very enlightening and moving book.
