When applying to colleges, it is important to think not only about the college you would like to attend but the transition process you will go through when becoming a college student. For many students on the autism spectrum, the transition from high school to college will go more smoothly if the student is as prepared as possible for all of the changes to come. Dorm life, social expectations, access to professors, meals, laundry, etc. will all be different for the student. We are fortunate that so many schools are developing programs to address this need. It has become evident that students on the autism spectrum will thrive better if they are given a little extra time to adjust to their new environment as an independent adult on a college campus.
