COLLEGE COUNSELING SERVICES
Dr. Schwartz received her College Counseling Certificate from UCLA in 2016. She has worked to integrate her knowledge of the strengths and challenges often associated with learning differences with the college admissions process. Dr. Schwartz believes that each student is unique, and the goal of her consultation service is to understand the unique qualities of each student, educate students and parents about the transition to college, and support families in creating plans and opportunities for after high school.
CONSULTATION SERVICES
Dr. Schwartz is taking on new families for consultative work only. Dr. Schwartz focuses her work on the skills needed for the transition to college, college readiness, and list development, which is explained further below. She is also available to consult on the various variables to consider regarding the final college decision once students are aware of where they have been admitted. If you are interested in connecting with coaches/tutors who partner with Dr. Schwartz in supporting students through the steps of college applications, please see the EF coach/tutor tab here.
COLLEGE READINESS AND COLLEGE LIST DEVELOPMENT
When working with Dr. Schwartz, discussions around the skills needed to successfully transition from a high school environment to a college setting will be incorporated into our meetings. We will review the differences between high school and college to inform students and parents of what will be expected of students in a college setting in order to receive the support services that will allow the student to find success in college. We will also review the different levels of support available in colleges, and discuss the type of learning environment that is a fit for the student. Independent living skills, academic skills, and self-advocacy skills are all areas that Dr. Schwartz will incorporate into the meetings with the student and parent. This information. along with various other factors including academic interests, finances, etc. will serve as a guide as we work to develop a college list that will offer the student a range of options.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES TO EXPLORE FOR SUPPORT AROUND APPLICATIONS
As Dr. Schwartz is offering only specific services regarding the college application process, and does not provide full guidance throughout, it can often be helpful to students to have additional resources to support them. Many students working with Dr. Schwartz also work with college consultants who are guiding them with their applications. She is happy to make recommendations to college consultants, or this is a link to an organization where you can search for an IEC (Independent Educational Consultant) https://www.iecaonline.com/ In working with an IEC, students will have a consultant that will guide them through timelines and expectations throughout the process.
Other families choose to work with a coach or tutor to help accomplish the tasks around college applications, and Dr. Schwartz can provide families recommendations as needed for these services. In addition to referrals in the community, Thrive College Counseling also has EF coaches/tutors who can work with students in collaboration with Dr. Schwartz. You can learn more here. It is important to note that Dr. Schwartz does not monitor the work of the students and their applications. Therefore, developing a plan for each family to have the organizational support for their student in place that is a match for the needs of the student is critical to this process, and ensuring the student is able to meet the time-lines of the expectations of college applications.
PLEASE NOTE:
It is important to be aware that the disability offices at many colleges will want a recent psychological evaluation in order to provide services to a student. This type of evaluation will also be important in guiding our path to identifying appropriate colleges. Feel free to contact Dr. Schwartz for a list of individuals providing evaluations as well as community based resources that might be appropriate for your family. It is up to the family to ensure that appropriate documentation is available for college disability offices to determine accommodations for the student as they transition to college.
Some colleges offer comprehensive support programs that require an additional application and fee. It is important that families are aware of these additional applications and work with your support system to ensure those are sent out within the recommended deadlines. It is up to the family to make the decision to apply to a program and be responsible for meeting the time frames for these applications.
